Coventry City's hopes of signing midfielder Bjarni Gudjonsson are fading fast, a leading town planner claimed today.


Senior solicitor and chartered town planner Denton Hall (pictured) fears that Gudjonsson, who has been on loan at City from Bundesliga outfit Vfl Bochum, will find it hard to leave the German side - because the city's parking provision is just too good.

Hall, who specialises in the negotiation of complex S.106 Agreements and mixed use developments, claims that City's bid has come at precisely the wrong time.

He said: "I strongly believe that Coventry's plans to sign Gudjonsson have been terribly undermined by the poor parking provision in the city, particularly as the Leigh Mills car park is currently inaccessible from the ring road.

"They have no such problems in Bochum, with no fewer than nine multi-storey car parks in the city centre alone.

"They back up this quite simply outstanding provision with what I can only describe as a dynamic guiding system to lead the driver to the nearest car park with spaces currently available.


"And even when the multi-storeys are full, Bochum boasts a staggering 1416 parking bays serviced by meters where one can pay with a rechargeable money chip.

"Many Bochum shops will also refund your parking fee upon the purchase of goods.

"Now correct me if I'm wrong here, but Coventry simply can't hold a candle to an integrated retail and parking strategy that has revolutionised city centre usage in Bochum.

"And that could well sway Gudjonsson when he finally sits down and seriously considers his future."

Coventry officials were quick to play down Mr Hall's claims.

A club spokesman said: "Coventry may not have as many multi-storey car parks as Bochum, but we have no fewer than 27 dedicated parking areas within the city centre.

"That's both quantity AND quality and something that Bjarni has been made well aware of by our contract negotiation team.

"When you factor in the Park & Ride schemes (both north and south), our rejuvenated canal network and the world-leading Bendibus, we are confident that Bjarni will be swayed by what Coventry has to offer from a transport-related point of view."

Bochum and Coventry are surprisingly similar in many other respects - both have a population of between three and four hundred thousand, both had a historical reliance on heavy industry which has now been replaced by industrial diversification and both were bombed to bits in the second world war.

On the footballing side, however, things aren't quite so close.

With one game of the season to go, Bochum could still finish fifth in the top flight - something Coventry haven't managed.

Ever.

If Gudjonsson does plump for Bochum's superior parking facilities, it won't be the first time City have lost their man over non-football related issues.

Thierry Henry once turned down a move to Highfield Road because Coventry lacked a city centre tapas bar.

And Dennis Wise famously wouldn't touch the city with a bargepole because there wasn't a Waitrose.

OD. mal ne kleine Zusammenfassung schreiben!

es geht im großen und ganzen darum, dass gudjonsson den vfl bochum nicht in richtung coventry city verlassen will, weil in bochum die parkplatz-situation so gut ist. es wird dann auch der spieler zitiert, der sich sehr detailliert über die parkmöglichkeiten auslässt. die city-verantwortlichen kontern dann, dass es bei ihnen auch nicht so schlecht sei.
coventry scheint solche probleme schon öfter gehabt zu haben, thierry henry wollte da nicht hinwechseln, weil es keine tapas-bar gibt, dennis wise (wer auch immer das nun ist) ist nicht dorthin gewechselt, weil es da keinen waitrose-supermarkt gibt.
nach allem was man da so liest wird coventry sicher nicht das nächste urlaubsziel sein: keine tapas und kein waitrose! was bilden die sich ein...

Tztzt... gibst denn das?

habs grad nochmal gelesen und festgetellt, dass die aussagen gar nicht vom spieler kamen sondern von einem stadtplaner aus coventry. gudjonsson hat sich gar nicht selbst geäußert. der stadtplaner spekuliert nur darüber, dass gudjonsson sich aus parkplatz-gründen für bochum entscheiden könnte. klingt also eher nach einem politikum, der mann wollte sicher nur einen aufhänger haben, um die situation in coventry zu kritisieren. oder so.

irgendwie ziemlich lächerlich dieser artikel.... zumindest meiner meinung nach
als wenn sich wirklich jemand nur wegen der schlechteren parkmöglichkeiten gegen coventry entscheiden würde...

Wenn Coventry ne Top-Adresse in Sachen Fussballl wäre, könnte man eventuell über die Parkplatzsituation, die fehlende Tapas-Bar und das nicht Vorhandensein des besagten Supermarktes hinweg sehen. Aber wenn die fussballerische Situation schon trist ist, muss es die Stadt ja nicht auch sein.
